Pictures from the event (by Pierre LeBoeuf)
The inaugural DERail tournament featured 18 players
playing 14 different railroad themed games in one 15 hour session. The unique format mixed games of various
types and lengths in a unified scoring system that awarded points for opponents
and games played, with a multiplier for game length, as well as points for each
player bested and games won.
The results of the 16 games played are shown in Table
1. The games played are listed in column
1, with the players listed in order of their finish in each game. Game scores are in parentheses, with the
tournament points awarded listed afterwards.
Each line is color-coded by game group, with Group
A (1 to 2 hour) games (red), Group B (2 to 4 hour) games (green),
and Group C (4 to 6 hour) (blue).
There were several very close games throughout the
tournament. Ken Long won the Rail Baron
game (even though his final score was lower than Scott Gould’s) by returning to
his start point first. David Hecht won
the 18EU 6156 to 5942 over Pierre LeBoeuf.
Kathy Stroh won the Ticket to Ride-Marklin game 197 to 190 over Jamie
Tang. Rick Dutton beat Bruce Beard 8914
to 8913 in the 1870 game. The Railroad
Tycoon game had Rich Shipley winning 107 to 104 over Steve Shambeda. Ken Long and John Weber finished Union
Pacific tied. The last game of the
evening, 1856, was a 5890 to 5852 win for Chad Blamey over Pierre LeBoeuf.

Table 1 –
Preliminary Round 1 Results
Bruce Beard combined
strong play (two firsts and three second place finishes) with rapid completion
normally lengthy games to claim the top prize.
Pete Lindholm was right behind him, playing in the same games, beating
Bruce once, and finishing right behind him in the other four games they played
together. Scott Gould and Steve Shambeda
demonstrated the strategy of playing numerous shorter games to rack up points,
finishing with strong showings. Late
arrivals Chad Blamey and Kevin Kirmse each won games. Table 2 lists the results
of each player, in their order of overall finish. The games in the table are color-coded by
group as before, with the placement points (times the game length bonus
multiplier) added to the number of opponents and number of games played to
yield the total points.

Table 2 –
Total Overall Scores
To award
prizes in the 18xx and non-18xx categories, the scores were recalculated to
show these individual results. Because
Bruce and Pete played four of their five games in this category, they again
finished one-two. The number of
opponents listed in this table included only those faced in 18xx games. Those who did not play any 18xx games were
omitted from this ranking and not shown in the table. Table 3 contains the 18xx results.

Table 3 –
18xx Results
The final table lists the
results of the players for all the non-18xx games they played. Here again, opponents in this table were
those faced in the non-18xx games, and those who played only 18xx games are not
listed. As there was some overlap, some
opponents were credited in both tables, so the total number of opponents in
table 2 is less than the sum from tables 3 and 4. Scott Gould, Ken Long, and Steve Shambeda
were closely bunched at the top of these standings. The Empire Builder game proved to be
decisive, with Scott’s win and Ken’s last place finish in a five player,
medium-length game providing a 10 point difference that was too much for Ken to
overcome.

Table 4 –
Non-18xx Results
Prize winners were Bruce
Beard, for best overall and best 18xx score – a set of embossed poker chips,
donated by Days of Knights and a GCOM medallion, and Scott Gould, best non-18xx
score – a copy of Mayfair’s new China Rails game, donated by Mayfair. Thank you to our sponsor’s, the Days of
Knights game store and the Gaming Club of Maryland and Mayfair games for
providing prizes.
Please provide me with
feedback (preferably via email) as to changes you would like to see in the
tournament for next year. Was the event
too long or too short? Would you like to
see it split over two days on a weekend?
What games would you like to see added?
Did the scoring system seem fair?
How would you suggest changing it?
If we charge an entry fee next year, what would you be willing to
pay?
In conclusion, thank you
to everyone for participating in our inaugural event and especially for all who
helped me set up and clean up afterwards.
