Update from 05/21/04:

This was the week that Damascus played host to the GCOM Formula De tournament, where we raced on the Monaco track. The next race in the series is on 05/27/04 at GCOM Rockville, where we will race at Nurburgring. Hope to see you there!

(PS. - we might need a second copy of the game and/or track, so if you are planning on participating and have a copy of Formula De and/or the Nurburgring track -- track #21 -- please bring it with you. Thanks!)

Games played: San Juan, Formula De, Oasis, Guillotine.

Attendees: David F., Noreen F., Andrew F., Scott F., Calvin F., Stan B., Rich O., Peter S., Kevin C., Paul H., Stuart T.

First up was a three-player game of San Juan as we waited for everyone to arrive. This was a really close game. Rich had a strong a diverse set of support buildings, while Paul went with a role-specialized building strategy, taking advantage of buildings that worked all on the same few roles. I am not sure what strategy I had in mind, but by mid-game it looked like I was going for the Guild Hall Strategy with a dash of Chapel thrown in. Rich was successfully paid on the Gold Mine twice in the game. Paul was able to build very quickly, and oftentimes was able to be paid for doing so, and the game was rather short because of it. The final scores were David 28, Rich 25, Paul 23. There was only 2 6-point buildings built.

Formula De:
The race had a tight opening, with two players losing one body point in the first turn, and one player (David Fair) losing two body points on the first turn. While there were a lot of bumps the entire race, no one was eliminated from body damage. Andrew was eliminated late in the first lap when he miscalculated a turn and overshot by more than his tires could handle. Peter joined him a few turns later in much the same manner.

The race stayed tight until the three-point turn on lap one, when Stuart, Paul and Scott managed to pull away from the pack. Things got a bit more dicey after the Pits when Paul pulled away to a large lead, and Stuart fell behind into the main pack. Scott made up lost ground with a chancy gear-6 roll, but made his numbers and re-took the lead for a short time. Paul and Scott kept exchanging lead positions until the last turn when Scott shot past the turn, spending his remaining tires in an attempt to gain ground. On the final straightaway, he needed at least 4 more than Paul to take the lead for the final roll. Paul rolled a 14, and Scott an 18. Scott takes the trophy.

Back in the middle of the race, three drivers had been eliminated. Stan held a fair lead on the rest of the racers, though Kevin, with careful play, was able to give him a bit of a race, Stan held his lead and they finished 3rd and 4th. Calvin was in there giving it his best, but alas, his tires gave out and he careened into a wall, leaving only a memory, and a dark stain. Kevin had spent much of the first lap in or near last place, and his move up was impressive.

David had been lingering in the last spot for much of the final lap, while Rich and Stuart fought to move up. He was able, with a few gutsy gear changes and lucky rolls, able to move up and take the lead over his two remaining opponents only on the last turn. The final three finished: David, Rich, Stuart.

As most of the racers called it a night, David, Scott, Rich, Noreen, and Calvin played a game of Alan Moon's Oasis. Despite getting a major rule wrong for the first 3 turns, we had a good time, and scores were fairly close, at least until Scott calculated his total. They ended up: Scott 84, Dave 63, Rich 57, Calvin 57, Noreen 51.

Rich had to call it a night, but Cal and Scott stuck around to humble us at Guillotine where Scott ended the final day early due to a fear of falling further behind, and the scores ended up as Calvin 17, Scott 15, Noreen 14, David 10.

We play again a week from Friday, on June 4, and hope to see you there.

PS. Be sure to congratulate Noreen if you see her, as.
